The silent erosion at the summit of power
Power begins to erode long before it loses territories: it weakens when those who sustain it cease to trust in the continuity of command. A structure may appear invulnerable from the outside while fracturing at its center. After the death of Túpac Yupanque, intrigues over the throne surround the child Huayna Cápac and turn the succession into a test for the Empire.
Huayna Cápac is still a child. His vulnerability makes a contradiction visible: a structure capable of governing enormous territories can depend, at a critical moment, on the physical safety of a five-year-old heir. The Koricancha becomes a refuge and the regency a field of dispute.
The erosion is silent because it does not yet appear as a military defeat. It manifests itself in rumors, distrust, and factions calculating who will control the future.
The succession demonstrates that an orderly transition is also a test of the maturity of institutions and of their capacity to endure.
