The sacred ancestral legitimation of the divine mandate
Legitimacy turns force into recognized authority: having the power to command is not enough; a society needs some reason to accept that command. Every era constructs symbols that explain why someone should govern. Wiracocha seeks that legitimation through his marriage to Mama Runtu and, above all, by adopting a sacred name after a vision that unites faith and a political project.
The marriage to Mama Runtu links the sovereign to a powerful lineage. Shortly afterward, a vision of Ticci-Wiracocha-Pachayacháchic offers him the name that will transform his public identity. Hatun Tópac Inga adopts a sacred designation that projects his destiny as something supported by a higher order.
In the account, religion and politics do not function as separate spheres. The divine name communicates a promise of power, brings followers together, and places the ruler within a narrative that his subjects can understand.
The ruler must confirm that legitimacy through responsibility and service.
